Hedges & Hedging Plants

Native Hedging

Native hedging plants are hedges that have developed naturally over thousands of years, without any human intervention. Classic native hedge plants in the UK include Box, Beech, Yew, and Hornbeam, all of which are incredibly popular choices for achieving a quintessentially British look.

Why Plant a Native Hedge?

One benefit of planting native hedgerow plants is that they are fully acclimatised to the UK, so they can tolerate many types of soil, including less favourable types. They have also adapted to our great British weather, able to tolerate and even thrive in the varied conditions the UK experiences.

Native hedges offer incredibly varied habitats too, making them extremely popular with local wildlife. They provide food, shelter, protection from predators, and safe travel corridors for hedgehogs and other small mammals, along with innumerable birds and insects.

These wonderfully diverse hedgerows can also bring privacy to your garden, help to keep intruders at bay, provide shade, colour and character throughout the seasons, and are a useful windbreak in coastal areas. Native hedging really is a true all-rounder!

Types of Native Hedgerow Plants

At Plants Direct SW, we offer a wide variety of mixed native hedge plant bare root packs including Economy Mixes, Coastal and Garden Mixes from autumn through to spring, as well as mixed native pot grown hedging pallet deals all year round. All of these offer fantastic value and variety.

Hedgerow Whips and Bare-Root Hedging

Hedgerow whips are young trees or shrubs that are ideal for planting as part of a mixed native hedge. They are usually sold as bare-root plants during the dormant season (November to March) when they can be safely transplanted. Bare-root hedging is an economical way to establish a new hedge or to fill gaps in an existing one. At Plants Direct SW, we offer a wide range of hedgerow whips and bare-root hedging options to suit your needs.

We also offer a wide range of individual native hedge plants such as English Yew (Taxus baccata), Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), English Holly (Ilex aquifolium), and many more.
